General
  • English is the second language and is widely spoken (90% of Cypriots speak English).
  • The currency of the Republic is the Euro which is divided into 100 cents.
    Banks in Cyprus open for the public from 08:30 to 12:30 midday. Certain banks in tourist areas open during the afternoon.
  • The voltage on the island is 240. Socket outlets are of flat 3 pin-type so will accommodate all normal UK appliances.
  • Cyprus has a very high standard of medical services. Hospitals, private clinics and medical centres are equipped with the latest facilities. EU visitors are advised to carry E111 forms for medical treatment.
  • Telephone: Telecards can be purchased from Post Offices, kiosks and souvenir shops. Local mobile phone SIMs can be purchased.
  • Time: Cyprus is 2 hours ahead of GMT.
Entry to Cyprus
  • There are two international airports in Cyprus, at Larnaka and Paphos.
  • Around 30 airlines connect Cyprus directly with most European and Middle-East countries, which provide ongoing services to anywhere in the world.
  • Visas: No visas are required for entry into Cyprus by nationals of most European countries. Nationals of other countries should contact the nearest Consulate of the Republic of Cyprus, or if none, the nearest British Consulate.
  • Vaccinations: Not required.
Climate
  • Cyprus enjoys the best Mediterranean climate with approximately 340 days of sunshine per year. Paphos has the finest climate on the island with cooler summers and short mild winters. The swimming season practically starts from April and does not end until November. Pine forests are close to the coast and it is possible to ski in the mountains in winter.
  • The average daytime temperature ranges from 32 degrees centigrade in August to 17 degrees centigrade in January.
  • Very cool, cotton clothes are recommended for the hot summer months. Jackets and light sweaters may be required for the evenings during May and June, September and October, and warm clothes are worn during the winter months.

  • Shops are closed all day Sunday and on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons.
  • Most credit cards are accepted and used in Cyprus such as Visa, American Express, Diners club and Master Card.
Getting Around
  • Driving is on the left-hand side of the road.
  • There are many car rental companies in Cyprus, and the top international names are all represented.
  • Petrol stations in all seaside areas and major towns are equipped with automatic pumps, accepting bank notes and operating on a 24-hour basis.
